Review: Auschwitz: A New History

Auschwitz: A New History Auschwitz: A New History by Laurence Rees
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The title of this work may suggest revisionist history. It is not. Laurence Rees has traced the history of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the infamous death camp. This book was originally published to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the camp's liberation. I read it now to commemorate the 75th anniversary of that liberation.

There is no way I can even begin to describe the horrors and suffering of that time--and the further horror Holocaust deniers further add to crimes perpetrated on an innocent people who's only CRIME was being of Jewish ancestry. I read this book because I believe there is great value in remembering history. I want never to forget it.

Laurence Rees has written several books about World War II and the Holocaust , and has produced films on the subject for the BBC. I highly recommend this most excellent book.

Review: American Oligarchs: The Kushners, the Trumps, and the Marriage of Money and Power

American Oligarchs: The Kushners, the Trumps, and the Marriage of Money and Power American Oligarchs: The Kushners, the Trumps, and the Marriage of Money and Power by Andrea Bernstein
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The title of this book speaks for itself as to the subject matter and point of view. If you want to begin to understand what these two families are all about and their ultimate objectives, I believe this is a good place to begin.

It is not an easy read if you love America and believe in the value of American democracy. Yet it is a worthwhile read, in my view. You cannot begin to undo damage or regulate against it until you begin to understand the nature, scope, harm and future ramifications of it. I call this book a remarkable piece of quality journalism. Well researched, documented and well written.

Review: The Awful Grace of God: Religious Terrorism, White Supremacy, and the Unsolved Murder of Martin Luther King Jr.

The Awful Grace of God: Religious Terrorism, White Supremacy, and the Unsolved Murder of Martin Luther King Jr. The Awful Grace of God: Religious Terrorism, White Supremacy, and the Unsolved Murder of Martin Luther King Jr. by Stuart Wexler
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Whether or not you believe Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was murdered by James Earl Ray, acting alone, or was murdered by individuals conspiring to do so, this book is a fascinating and informative read. It details many of the hate groups active in the 1960s in the United States, their activities, and their interactions with one another.

One of the fascinating and totally abhorrent truisms expressed in this book is the number of Christian pastors who are openly segregationist, at best, and haters of African American people and others, at worst. It is disgusting. What this book did for me, among other things, is show me that hatred and racism is even more wide spread than I previously chose to believe. I am better informed for having read this book.

Review: Galileo: Watcher of the Skies

Galileo: Watcher of the Skies Galileo: Watcher of the Skies by David Wootton
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Most of us have heard of Galileo and his amazing discoveries in astronomy and other scientific areas. And, prior to reading this book, I did know that he was in trouble with the Catholic church. Aside from that, I knew next to nothing about him. This book brought him to life. It also described the culture and state of science and medicine in his time.

What kept coming to me as I read was the how complex life was for him. He had to deal with skeptics and haters and critics. He had to deal with family and "friends" who wanted money and/or favors, and some downright moochers. And, he had to deal with illness, and eventually, blindness. I would say, even though he was a genius, he lived a rather sad and unhappy life.

The research and detail this book offers is truly amazing. Mostly supported facts and very little supposition. Although a little dry at times, I enjoyed this book a great deal.

Review: Fool Me Once

Fool Me Once Fool Me Once by Harlan Coben
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Readers of Harlan Coben's books know there is nothing quite like reading one. There's always a great plot, great characters and a great story. And, so it is with FOOL ME ONCE. Maya is dealing with so many issues. Her husband has been killed, and now someone is after her--trying to drive her crazy or worse. In one single moment, her life changes, yet again.

This book was like a roller coaster ride. Too many twists and turns to get comfortable. They come at you so fast. I enjoyed this book so much.
