My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I have read a few books about the influenza pandemic of 1918-19. Each, in its own way, has been interesting and instructive. This title is also both interesting and instructive. It traces the causes and development of the influenza pandemic of 1918-19 as well as other influenza outbreaks such as the Swine flu and Hong Kong flu outbreaks. I learned much from this book, and especially appreciated the time taken to interject the personal biographies and efforts of several of the scientists at work to research and try to explain why the influenza pandemic of 1918-19 was so virulent and so deadly. If the subject interests you, as it does me, this book is a great read.

My review: This Tender Land by William Kent Krueger

This Tender LandThis Tender Land by William Kent Krueger

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Most years, I'm blessed to read at least one book that will stay with me for life. This is one of those books. It is a remarkable story of the journey of four youngsters in the summer of 1932. It's difficult to put into words, how much I love this story and how amazing I think it is. So much so, I didn't want it to end, and I have tears in my eyes as I write this. And isn't that the beauty of a really great book? It's all in the emotion and inner response it lights in your heart. For me, it's often a spiritual experience. It certainly was with THIS TENDER LAND.

The Clay HandThe Clay Hand by Dorothy Salisbury Davis

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A famous journalist is murdered in a small mining town in the mid twentieth century, and all of the town's flaws come to light in the process of solving the crime. This is truly one of the best mysteries I've ever read. Everything about this book is superb, from the writing to the character development and suspense. The twists and turns keep coming until the very end.

My review: A Beautiful Place to Die: Martha's Vineyard Mystery #1 by Philip R. Craig

A Beautiful Place to Die: Martha's Vineyard Mystery #1A Beautiful Place to Die: Martha's Vineyard Mystery #1 by Philip R. Craig

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Martha's Vineyard is a beautiful place for a mystery. A former Boston police officer, retired and living a peaceful life on Martha's Vineyard, becomes involved in the investigation after a man is killed in the explosion of a boat. I liked the book more for the scenery and the main character than I did for the mystery of the "who done it." This story was an average read for me. I didn't dislike it, but it wasn't exactly spine-tingling either.

My review: Fatal North: Murder and Survival on the First North Pole Expedition by Bruce Henderson

Fatal North: Murder and Survival on the First North Pole ExpeditionFatal North: Murder and Survival on the First North Pole Expedition by Bruce Henderson

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Fatal North: Murder and Survival on the First North Pole Expedition reads like a thriller though it is nonfiction. It chronicles the 1871 attempt by the United States to reach the North Pole. The character of individuals was sorely tested in the ill-fated expedition, and it became a fight for survival.

The writing is superb, a testament to the author's research as well as diaries and documentation kept by chroniclers. What I found especially interesting is the outcome of the expedition, given the relative infancy of arctic exploration, absent the technology of today. I will definitely be reading more by Bruce Henderson.

My review: Lindbergh: The Crime by Noel Behn

Lindbergh: The CrimeLindbergh: The Crime by Noel Behn

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Lindbergh: The Crime presents the Lindburgh baby's kidnapping in a whole new light. The book is part new evidence and part conspiracy theory. What can be said is that, no matter what theory or theories one believes, it is a very complex case. As I was reading, I often felt I was reading a surreal novel filled with manipulative people at the highest levels. If the subject interests you, read the book and draw your own conclusions. I'm not convinced, in the same way the author is, that the kidnapping was an inside job. But neither am I convinced that the man convicted and who died in the electric chair was solely responsible.

My review: The flight: Charles Lindbergh's 1927 Trans-Atlantic Crossing by Dan Hampton

Charles Lindbergh, in flying solo, nonstop from New York to Paris in 1927, was, of course unequaled in its daring, especially considering aviation and flight were fraught with danger and many unknowns. In this book, Dan Hampton presents a perspective I've not read previously. The majority of the book tells Charles Lindbergh's story from the perspective of his time in the air and what he experienced. The later part of the book explains, or tries to explain, Charles A. Lindbergh the man. This interested me very much. So much has been written about his political views for which he is often maligned. I think that is often done in a way which overshadows his character and humanity. I'm glad this book presents a more balanced portrayal, and I thought it a great read. One I will likely revisit.

My review: Close Enough to Touch by Colleen Oakley

Close Enough to TouchClose Enough to Touch by Colleen Oakley

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

":Close Enough to Touch" by Colleen Oakley is truly a delightful read. It sparked my interest from the very beginning, partly because of the subject matter--allergic reactions--and a lifestyle that is unusual by today's standards. The romance was also very realistic. Not sappy. Not boy meets girl and they live happily ever after. That is fake to me. This story, though fictional, was very real, containing all the elements of real life. I laughed and cried my way through this story, and enjoyed every word and every emotion it brought out.

My Review: The Other People: A Novel by C. J. Tudor

The Other PeopleThe Other People by C.J. Tudor

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

A father struggles with the disappearance/death of his only daughter. His total focus is on figuring out what happened to her. He knows she is not dead because he has seen her, in a car, real, and personal, yet no one believes him. They think he is unbalanced and refuses to accept her death. So, he drives and drives, prowling the roads looking for the car.

The storyline is a good one. However, I found myself confused. It moves back-and-forth between several characters, and sometimes, I felt lost. This is not to say, it is not a good story. It is suspenseful, and moves quite rapidly, but I admit to being relieved when it was finally finished.

Sloan McPherson, a Florida police diver, becomes involved in a case that becomes both intensely personal for her and her family, and a matter of life and death for her. Andrew Mayne is a master of invention with this first in the series called Underwater Investigation Unit. The plot, adventure and suspense of this book drew me in immediately. It was just an amazing read. I can hardly wait for the next installment!
